How to quit my job the correct way?

I’m 25 years old and basically I’m committed to quitting my job after COVID is over and traveling around the world for at least a couple of years before buying a house/settling down officially.

By the time the pandemic is over, I will have been at this job for 1-1.5 years depending, so I’ve put in enough time as to where it won’t look awful that I left on future resumes.

I don’t want to burn any bridges because this is a great job and I plan on using the experience to find other work in the same industry after my travels. I’ve become work friends with my manager and others on my team. They will definitely be surprised, and likely disappointed, when I tell them I’m quitting.

All of my co-workers know that I’m big into investing, so my current plan is to say that I got extremely lucky on a risky trade and made enough to justify not working for a couple of years and using the time to travel (this is actually what happened). I know it sounds kinda crazy, but it happens to people all the time and I honestly can’t think of a better way to tell them “hey thanks for training me and investing in me, but now I want to quit and travel the world” lol.

I know I don’t have to give them a reason and I don’t owe them anything, but like I said I want to remain on good terms with management for a reference in the future if needed. I also respect the company and the leadership team as it really is a good company and they treat me well, I just need some life experience before I settle down for good.
Any suggestions?

Just be honest with your boss that this is something you've always wanted to do.
This. In my experience, if you are honest and say that you are accomplishing a life goal of yours, your employer will be alright with it.
I've actually quit my job to travel on three separate occasions, and each time, my employer has been thrilled for me. As a side note, it has also never impacted my ability to find a job again when I return from traveling.
If you feel comfortable being honest about it, it's definitely worth it.
Here are a few basic tips that I'd recommend for how to correctly quit your job:
Tell your boss in person (or Zoom) that you are leaving your job - resist the urge to do it over text or email.
Share with your boss that you are leaving your job to travel the world.
Give plenty of notice – if possible. If not, give a minimum of 2 weeks.
Be honest, yet polite about your experience working at the company.
Be helpful as you transition out. Offer to help onboard your replacement, etc.
If you do all these things right and are helpful to the end, you'll increase your chances of getting a good letter of recommendation.
Agreed. This is what I did. They were delighted for me. They paid me to freelance while I was travelling and offered me a job again as soon as I got home. People appreciate honesty. At the end of the day, you only get one life and if you've always wanted to travel, you can't give that up out of loyalty to an employer.
I did this, and got my job back 1.5 years later. If you're good, they'll take you back, and your manager will likely admire your adventurous spirit.
Also I gave them as long of notice as they needed to fill my position, which ended up being ~6 weeks, during which I saved every penny and planned/coordinated my round the world trip. Win win wins all around.
Exactly this. Be honest, and don't burn bridges. Be appreciative to the experience you have had there and if you want to return some day, express that you hope there could be a door open in the future.
Not sure what the situation is in the US, but it's not unusual for Australians in their 20s to leave their jobs to undertake long term travel (including a period working overseas). There's no need to lie to anyone about it.
Speaking as a middle manager, any half-decent manager is also pretty used to the fact that good staff will eventually leave, and is relaxed about this fact of life. If you're worried about how your boss will take it, a good practice is to give them plenty of notice so they can recruit your replacement so they're in place when you finish up.
People leave jobs all the time. Just be polite about it. You don't need to create an elaborate backstory. Based on your age you probably haven't had a lot of work experience. It feels like a dramatic moment when you tell your manager you are leaving but it is just part of the cycle. People leave jobs for other jobs, to travel, to care for family. After you've done it a few times it will be less of a big deal.
Someone here made a suggestion about a leave of absence. It may not work for your industry, but it is a good suggestion. You go on unpaid leave for one year, they hire someone on a one year contract. It is quite possible you won't want to travel for years, and one year will do. Then you have a job you enjoy in an industry you want to continue to work in to come back to. If, after 6 months, you know the travelling lifestyle is for you, you quit and they can keep on your replacement.
The pandemic won’t be over for a while yet so you have some time. I would recommend putting travel off until Jan 2022 so when you go you are able to be gone for a while.
At least a few months before going you should start planting the seed that you will be going. Bring it up to them in advance and they will be able to transition you out well. The worst thing to do in a career is give notice 2 weeks before leaving (unless you work at McDonald’s lol). If you let them know what you said in this post (be honest with them, tell them you need to do this for yourself and your personal goals, give them a timeline on how long you’ll be gone). If you give them a few months to plan for your departure it won’t stress the company that much and you can maintain a good relationship with them
2022 is my timefrx. But thanks. I think this is the best option. I was worried about them firing me after I tell them/not believing me. But giving them enough time to find a replacement for me is probably best.
That is a concern. When I left BigFruityCo 15 years ago, I expected to be shown the door immediately for security reasons, so I made sure I had myself financially covered well enough to survive an extra few months. Strangely enough, that did not happen.
It really depends. If you're leaving for traveling and the people like you, they would probably appreciate the notice and start training someone else.
if you're leaving for a competitor in tech, you will be walked out the door while supervised immediately.
If you'll be gone for "a couple of years" it does not really matter when you leave, right?
So just wait until you are ready, and then let them know you'll be leaving in a couple of months. If they fire you on the spot, you can wrap up things at home and go. If they want you around a few months to find someone new, then you stay a few months and save up some additional funds.
Yes I think they’ll take it as a sign of respect. You may be able to train your replacement too which will take a big burden off your employer. I’ve seen advice on this thread saying “put in a two weeks”, those people must not be in a highly competitive career that requires good relationships to get jobs.
I guess it depends on what you do for work. As a manager, I don't expect anything more than a two weeks notice and a "Nice knowing you." Even from the people I've gotten to be "work friends" with. As long as you work the two weeks and there weren't any other problems (sounds like there aren't) you're eligible for rehire or a positive reference. If you want to go above and beyond, a letter telling them why you respect them and that you're thankful for the experience is nice, I suppose. As far as the risky trade thing, they likely don't actually give a damn how you got money to travel or why you're doing it. Desire to travel isn't abnormal.
You’re over thinking this. Just hand in a letter of resignation saying you have appreciated your time here, but are going to spend the next X amount of years travelling and give your two weeks
Just say you enjoyed working with them, but the pandemic gave you a new perspective on life and you'd like to spend some time travelling.
I imagine that is probably even true. I would avoid lying if possible.
I've done this and was re-hired at the same firm when I returned. You don't need to explain how you got any money. Just be honest with them about what you want to do. If they like you then they'll want to keep a relationship. Give them as much notice as you can, talk about wrapping up projects, pick a last day that works for everyone. You can even help them find your replacement if that makes sense for your position/network.
You plan on traveling for a couple of years and THEN buy a house ? After a year or 2 of traveling you’ll not have money to buy a house. I’d buy house first, and rent it out while you travel. Financially you’ll know where you stand, have the house being paid for. Perhaps have some profit in the rent which will offset some travel expenses plus you’ll have a home to return to.
Hi! I just did this. I’m 25 and had 2.5 years at my job. I told them the truth, I’m young and I have personal questions I need to answer on my own time! Everyone was very understanding. People leave their jobs all the time.
It sounds like you’re friends with these people and the environment appears healthy, telling them the truth is OK as long as you aren’t bad mouthing the company or manager in the process. I made the transition as seamless as possible. I made sure my replacement was more than prepared to take on my role, I was extremely thankful to my team for all their support throughout my time there, I wrote long thank you emails to my clients, and went on my way.
Why is this even an issue? Say you want to travel... it’s a job and you will have many over your life. Even had anything awful happen to me when I changed jobs.

Again I want to emphasize how people knowing you are doing financially well may bring many unpleasant individuals or circumstances into your life. You shouldn’t tell them about your finances.
Recent homebuyer here. Unless you’re planning to buy a home with cash, mortgage lenders typically want to see at least two years of steady employment.
Who told you COVID will end?
Hiring manager here. At 25 it does look awful on your CV if you quit after only 1-1.5 years and then expect to get back into the industry a couple years later. 2.5-3 years is the minimum. You do yours, but from a job perspective, that's really not a good idea.
Don't lie or make up a story. It WILL come back and bite you in the ass one day, guarantee.
And no, you don't owe them anything but if you feel like you have to give an excuse the best way is to just be honest. What are they going to do? Not allow you to quit? They might be disappointed but there is someone out there who will happily take your job and your former bosses will happily hire to replace you. Life goes on.
If you want to travel the world, the time is now. Do it, don't feel guilty or make it weird. There's no shame in your plans.
yeah don't talk about your investments Yada Yada. just be upfront and be clear. it's not the end of the world for them, there are a lot of people looking for jobs. just give them enough notice
Don't tell your manager anything. Send them an e-mail with a picture of you on the airplane, then ask if you could keep your job after travelling the world. I haven't do e it personally but it's what my gut tells me
You MUST write a letter. You don’t need to explain why you’re leaving. Just have it say you have loved the job, it was great working there, You’re grateful for the opportunity, and experience. Yards yadda that’s it. You don’t owe them anymore than that. Don’t trust anyone. When it comes to jobs, work, and money, those who you trust the most can fuck you’re over, even if you’re a great worker. Just write a letter giving them the least info but the most gratitude, then get the help out of there. Good luck

you don't owe anyone an explanation and you certainly don't need to justify your financial situation. detach from the feeling of owing your employer something.
they have to invest in and train any employee, and you generate far more money for them than they pay you.
in any case, just give two weeks notice by meeting with your boss and HR. Tell them you enjoyed working with them but you really need to take some time for yourself, especially after a challenging time with the pandemic.
no one is going to hold it against you.
Why do you feel the need to lie?
Just give enough notice, offer to transfer your workload to someone else and tell them that you are planing to travel for a while. If it is a good company they'll be happy for you and if you are a good employee, they may ask you to give them a call when you are back.
That's it, simple.
you don't owe them aything. you've done your job and they paid you. done. if you really feel the need to explan, your last paragraph should cover. put your plan together, give them 2 - 4 weeks notice and hit the road! no regrets
I was completely honest with my boss when I told him I was quitting to ride a motorcycle to South America. I gave 3 months notice and he refused to “let me quit”, but instead told me I was on a leave of absence.
This worked out amazingly well because this is when the 2009 crash happened and my investments weren’t what they should be and I freaked out and went back to work. My boss and team welcomed me back after 9 months of travel.
Someone on my team did this last Summer. It’s not unheard of and it’s your life after all. No need to justify your decision.
