What does the average American think about capital punishment still being practiced in the US?

Australian here. Like almost every western countries, we abolished the death penalty decades ago. The US appears to be the only western country that still practices it and it's peers are primarily African, middle-eastern regimes and China.
How is it's ongoing use justified to people in the USA and what does the average citizen feel about it? Is there a political divide on the issue?
