Australian here. Like almost every western countries, we abolished the death penalty decades ago. The US appears to be the only western country that still practices it and it's peers are primarily African, middle-eastern regimes and China.
How is it's ongoing use justified to people in the USA and what does the average citizen feel about it? Is there a political divide on the issue?

Uh dude, I'm referring to the reality of what's been going on. States have been delaying executions due to difficulty obtaining drugs. And Europeans will not export them to help. And you'll find that many US scientists and doctors are also not interested in being of any help.
This is exactly why you've been seeing states talking about shooting people and electric chairs and going full nazi gas chambers.

Executions have been halted on a federal level to review if there are better ways to go about it. 23 states have outright banned the death penalty, others haven't done so in decades. The problem you're talking about is in a few sext states.
I know some executions last year were suffering shortages from their suppliers on those drugs, but the U.S. has the means to deliver those drugs, those sext prisons just don't buy it from the U.S. (usually they don't have the funds to or have no other choice but to buy elsewhere).
Also, the drugs are in the U.S. but U.S. "drug manufacturers have shied away from selling to states under pressure from anti-death penalty activists." So prisons go over this problem by ordering drugs from overseas.

Just to shed some light on this topic. 92 countries still have a death penalty system in place. 106 dont allow it by law. China has the highest number of death penalty / legal killings (estimates in the thousands), U.S. actually has some of the lowest numbers with 22 in 2019. This year in the U.S. there has been 5 death penalty executions. Of those 5, 3 were Black, the other 2 were White. Majority of death row inmates are White with Black being slightly below that. The number of executions in the U.S. has been at a steady decline for decades and it's at it's lowest rates again.

I doubt most people give it a second thought since it's usually reserved for people who have committed such big crimes that most agree the world would be better off without them (not that I agree, just the views I see).

I think overall support for the death penalty is declining but in specific, very public instances like mass shootings, there's still support for executing people.

I'll also point out that it's "ongoing use" varies. My state officially got rid of it 2 years ago, but hasn't actually executed anyone since 1939.

My state abolished the death penalty in 1911. We have a very low homicide rate (even though we had one of the most famous homicides in recent memory last year). It's not a deterrent. It's a form of vengeance. And I don't think any justice system should be predicated on vengeance.

It is generally a left- or right-wing split, but I find it to be kind of a wild card. I've met Christian fundamentalists who strongly opposed the death penalty and woke socialists who were for it. It is justified because it is typically reserved for heinous crimes, such as premeditated murder, treason, or terrorism. You won't find inmates on death row for stealing a car or shtupping the milkman's wife.
I'm generally for it, and believe that capital convictions ought to be reserved for extreme circumstances, but I strongly disagree with the current practice of lethal injection. There is medical evidence suggesting that lethal injections are not properly administered and that the drug cocktail does not actually result in a quick, painless death. Instead, it seems to cause pulmonary edema, which is not a fun way to go. You feel like you're drowning or asphyxiating.
There are other methods of execution which result in a much faster death, like a firing squad, which is generally opposed due to the naked brutality of it; but, if we're going to have capital punishment, we might as well be honest about it and have the decency to make it swift.

It's less ethical to lock someone in a cell for the rest of their life. I understand why people don't like it, but at the point where you have committed either (a) a heinous enough crime or (b) enough major crimes to get a literally life in jail, you have either the option of forcing someone into a box to sit and wait until they die, or them dying early. Either way they will sit in jail for the rest of their life, it's more ethical to end it earlier.

This doesn't really make much sense because people currently sentenced to life in prison are capable of gaining access to the entire prison and anything that it bothers to offer but those sentenced to death can be kept on death row which is essentially solitary confinement for years/decades/however long it takes to get around to killing them.
People do make themselves a life in prison. I'm against our fucking obsession with prison in general but this is how it is.
So basically you'd be submitting them to what you find unethical and then also killing them.

I am against it because of human error. Once you have executed someone unfairly, you can't bring them back. No court is 100% and this is before we start talking about things like racial bias in sentencing, etc. If we know that we will kill one innocent person, then it is not worth it.
